National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

The Houston Chapter of CLMA Celebrates National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

The week of April 19 – 25, 2009 has been designated as National Medical Laboratory Week.
“Laboratory Professionals Get Results”

CLMA celebrates lab week with the following goals:

  • Recognizing the vital contributions made to our hospital and community by medical laboratory science professionals
  • Recognizing the dedication of these men and women
  • Calling the public’s attention to the role of the medical laboratory professionals in patient care
  • Enhancing the image of laboratory medicine and those who practice it

Often thought of as the unsung heroes behind the scenes, laboratory testing can lead you on a healthy path. More than seventy percent of the electronic medical record on hospitalized patients includes data from the laboratory. This is vital information that assists the physician in diagnosis and treatment. Beyond the walls of the hospital laboratory setting, the television glamour of shows such as CSI:Crime Scene Investigation and Bones have sparked a new interest in what the clinical laboratory scientist can do! The career path of the clinical laboratory science can lead to endless opportunities outside the typical hospital setting. To mention a few places where I have seen laboratorians venture:

  • in the industrial lab and numerous independent laboratory settings
  • instrumentation specialists and sales representatives for diagnostic companies
  • in the roles of infection control practitioners, hospital safety/compliance officers
  • paternity testing and various clinic settings
  • epidemiology
  • academic teaching roles
  • consultant roles – efficiency experts and medical-legal assistants

The Houston Chapter recognizes the laboratory professionals in the Greater Houston area and says “thank you” for your all important contribution to the health and well being of our community.

    Regards,
Charlie Combs, President Greater Houston CLMA, Inc.
